I wrote a thank you letter to my supervisor at work, Jess. She first inspired me when she and her husband became foster parents. She told me how they decided to become foster parents because they couldn't have children of their own. She kept us updated on how the boys were settling in and all they had overcome since being with them. I told her I was considering social work and after hearing her story I would like to be affiliated with foster care maybe. She told me she thought I would be great in that field. She agrees that my kind heart is exactly what some people need, especially kids. She has always worked with me and my schedule for work and school when I was going to classes on campus and making sure I have enough time to compete my school assignments now that I have become virtual. She has always offered to help in any way she can whether it was being a reference or actually finding job opportunities for me to look at in counseling or social work. Even though a job in social work means I have to leave my current job and she'll she losing a hardworking employee, she still finds time and cares enough to search for job opportunities for me or people in a similar field I could talk to about my plans because she believes in me. She is definitely someone who encourages and inspires me no matter what and I'm so grateful.

Activity #4: Words of Wisdom Entry
TIPS FOR FUTURE FAMILY SCIENCE STUDENTS
What do you wish you had known when you began attending McNeese?
I wish I had known about the Family Science program sooner. I spent my first year in nursing and only two of the courses I took were useful when I switched to Family Science. I could have spent time in courses that would have been more valuable towards this degree. I also wish I had known it may take me trying something to know it's not right for me, and that it's okay to not know what will come next and to not stress myself out over things like that.
What tips would you give new students about how to be successful in the Family Science program?
My first and most important tip would be to not focus on one category or career in family sciences because there are so many opportunities out there to consider that you may not have thought of, but would do really great in and enjoy. I first considered therapy and counseling but when I discovered social work, which wasn’t my first consideration, I found that field was right for me. Another tip would be to talk with your professors and advisors. Dr. Elijah helped me out in so many ways and gave me helpful information about my future schooling and plans when I first got into the family science program. Professor White has continually expanded my knowledge as I continue in this program and is really helpful and answers any questions I have, so making sure to talk with your professors and check in with them is really important in the family science program.
What message would you give to students beginning preparations for their internships?
I was part of the hurricane Laura/Delta internship program and struggled to find the right fit and opportunity. Professor White and I considered at least 5 or 6 different options both virtual and in-person. The internship I took was something I hadn't considered so was hesitant and nervous at first, but I have learned and gained so much from my internship and all the people I work with there that I will be able to use in the future. It ended up being the perfect fit for me. They have helped me with my communication skills and just carrying a conversation which I have struggled with personally and shown me the depth of needs in our community and the many ways I can be a part of meeting those needs. The message I would give to students beginning preparations for their internship is to expect the unexpected out of any situation. Just because things don't seem to be going right or how you had planned, doesn’t mean they aren't going to work out just as they were meant to. You may end up learning more about yourself along with important aspects and career opportunities in family science. Remember that you are awesome and will go on to do great things!
